This was in 1994, when Nambi Narayanan was leading ISRO's cryogenic rocket engine project and acquiring technology from Russia. On 30 November 1994, three policemen reached his house. At that time Nambi had no idea what was going to happen to her. The first question he asked the policemen was, 'Have I been arrested?' In response, the policemen said, 'No'.

Completely unaware of the matter, Nambi was taken to court and then arrested. After this the news spread like fire in the media and he was even called a traitor. He was accused of defrauding ISRO, leaking Defense Department information to two Maldivian women and selling rocket technology to Pakistan.

Nambi was sent to judicial custody for 11 days on charges of breach of India's official secret law and corruption. Several reports claim that Nambi Narayanan was beaten up, made to bed and inhumane acts were done to him during the custody of the investigating officers. He was forced to stand up straight for 30 hours and answer questions. Nambi Narayan's lie detector test was also done. But it is said that its report never reached the court.

A month after Nambi's arrest, the case moved from the Kerala Intelligence Bureau to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and on 19 January 1995, he was released on bail. In 1996, the CBI termed the allegations against him as false. During this an internal check was also done by ISRO and it was found that none of the drawings of the cryogenic engine were missing.

The CBI had filed a 104-page chargesheet in this case, in which they did not find any evidence against Nambi. In 1998, the Kerala government had tried to reopen the case by knocking on the doors of the Supreme Court. But the Supreme Court had turned down the petition.

After getting a clean chit, Nambi started working as an administrator in ISRO. In 2018, the Supreme Court ordered an inquiry into the conspiracy in the case.

Nambi himself had also filed a case against the Kerala government for implicating him in a false case. He was given a compensation of Rs 50 lakh. In 2019, the Kerala government announced an additional one crore rupees to Nambi Narayanan for his wrongful arrest and harassment.

Who had conspired against Nambi, it is not known till date but due to this incident all his honour, dignity and happiness were lost. In her memoir, Nambi, describing the pain of appearing in court for the first time, wrote, "I was in shock and felt as if I was watching a film and I was its character."

3. Marvan Attapattu (Srilankan Cricketer)

inspiring real life stories touched heart

It’s a story that Harsha Bhogle, India’s most loved cricket commentator, loves to tell, over and over again.

Making his debut in Test cricket for Sri Lanka, Marvan scored a duck in his first innings.

And again, in his second innings.

They dropped him. So he went back to the nets for more practice.

More first-class cricket. More runs. Waiting for that elusive call. And after twenty-one months, he got a second chance.

This time, he tried harder.

His scores: 0 in the first innings, 1 in the second. Dropped again, he went back to the grind. And scored tonnes of runs in first-class cricket. Runs that seemed inadequate to erase the painful memories of the Test failures.

Well, seventeen months later, opportunity knocked yet again. Marvan got to bat in both innings of the Test. His scores: 0 and 0. Phew!

Back to the grind. Would the selectors ever give him another chance? They said he lacked big-match temperament. His technique wasn’t good enough at the highest level. Undaunted, Marvan kept trying.

Three years later, he got another chance. This time, he made runs. He came good. And in an illustrious career thereafter, Marvan went on to score over 5000 runs for Sri Lanka. That included sixteen centuries and six double hundreds. And he went on to captain his country. All this despite taking over six years to score his second run in Test cricket.

Wow! What a guy!

How many of us can handle failure as well as he did?

Six years of trying, and failing. He must have been tempted to pursue another career. Change his sport perhaps. Play county cricket. Or, oh well, just give up. But he didn’t. And that made the difference.

We all hear stories of talented people who gave up before their potential was realized. People who changed jobs and careers when success seemed elusive.

The next time you are staring at possible failure or rejection, think of Marvan. And remember this: If you don’t give up, if you believe in yourself, if you stay the course, the run will eventually come. What more you could even become captain some day.
